Here are a few ways Radical Black Mental Health Therapists are changing the way therapy services are provided:

  1. Cultural Affirmation:

    • Wearing Bonnets and Laying Edges:

      • Radical Black therapists recognize the importance of cultural affirmation. Wearing bonnets and laying edges in therapy sessions is a visual representation of embracing and celebrating the diverse beauty practices within the Black community.

  2. Systemic Critique:

    • Addressing Flaws in the Mental Health System:

      • Radical Therapists actively critique the mental health system, shedding light on its historical biases and shortcomings, especially in its treatment of Black individuals. By questioning the status quo, we aim to reshape mental health care into a more inclusive and just system.

  3. Confronting White Supremacy and Social Work Ethics:

    • Navigating White Supremacy in Therapy:

      • Radical Therapists openly address the impact of white supremacy on mental health, providing a space where clients can express their experiences without fear of judgment. We challenge social work** ethics that may inadvertently perpetuate systemic inequalities.

  4. Tailoring Treatment Approaches:

    • CBT and Trauma in Black Clients:

      • While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is widely regarded as an effective therapeutic approach for many individuals, it is essential to recognize the potential harm it can pose to Black clients due to its cultural insensitivity and lack of contextual awareness. CBT may not sufficiently consider the unique experiences, social structures, and historical contexts that shape the lives of Black individuals. The emphasis on individual thoughts and behaviors without addressing systemic factors may perpetuate a colorblind perspective, ignoring the impact of racism, discrimination, and intergenerational trauma.

  5. Diverse Treatment Modalities:

    • Beyond Evidenced-Based Approaches:

      • Understanding the limitations of evidenced-based treatments, Black therapists explore a range of therapeutic modalities that may not have been extensively researched on Black populations. We pull from these modalities and tailor treatment to each client. We use treatments that involve the body including Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Brain Spotting Therapy. We also encourage healing practices like sound bowls, breath work, yoga, and Reiki.

  6. Financial Accessibility:

    • Accepting Vouchers from Organizations:

      • To bridge the financial gap in accessing mental health care, radical Black therapists often accept vouchers from organizations like the Loveland Foundation and Black Girls Smile, ensuring that economic barriers do not hinder the healing process.

  7. Enhanced Communication:

    • Texting and Calling as Therapeutic Tools:

      • Acknowledging the importance of constant support, Radical Therapists embrace modern communication tools. Texting and calling are integrated into therapy, providing clients with a more immediate and personalized form of assistance.

  8. Avoiding Hospitalization Harm:

    • Empowering Clients Safely:

      • Radical Black Therapists strive to avoid unnecessary hospitalization, understanding the potential harm it can cause to Black clients. Instead, we work collaboratively with clients to develop alternative coping strategies and support networks.

Radical Black therapists are pioneering transformative practices that prioritize cultural sensitivity, systemic critique, and individual empowerment. By challenging traditional norms and advocating for inclusivity, we are redefining what it means to provide a safe and affirming space for Black clients. As the field continues to evolve, we are driving positive change and fostering mental well-being within the Black community.
